  Stan Savran, a longtime television and radio talk-show host whose passion and knowledge for sports might have been exceeded only by his popularity, passed away at his home Monday, his sister, Karen Savransky, said. He was 76. Mr. Savran had been battling a number of illnesses, including lung cancer, and had been off the air from his daily talk show on ESPN Pittsburgh for several months. He announced in April he had his right foot amputated. "He was one of a kind," his sister, Karen, said. For all his work on television and radio, Mr. Savran was best known for co-hosting a talk show with Guy Junker called "Sportsbeat" on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh. The expression "Stan ... Guy, love the show," became a Pittsburgh staple for years. Sportsbeat was the longest running sports show in Pittsburgh television history when it was canceled after a 17-year run in July 2009. Stan Savran, a longtime local sports television and radio personality, announced this week that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. "He was a gentleman in every way possible, and he did so much for our city and Western Pa. with his honest candor and knowledge of all sports, both locally and nationally. "Stan was involved for many years working on our Steelers Radio Network as well as doing several Steelers' interviews and shows, while also being a valuable contributor to our Hall of Honor committee. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed, but always remembered." Mr. Savran handled all sports but was especially visible as a pregame television host for Pirates baseball and Penguins hockey. He also wrote a weekly column for four years for the Post-Gazette. His popularity stemmed from his commitment to offer his perspective, no matter whom it might offend. Mr. Savran passionately rooted for his native Cleveland baseball team. He came to Pittsburgh in 1976 after answering a magazine ad for an opening at WWSW-AM. He worked there three years before moving to KQV, which is where his talk show and popularity began to rise.
