Notes |
- ames Warren Abrahamson Passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. He was a forth-generation native San Franciscan, and a well-known restaurateur. He was active in the Bay Area civic community. Jim was born in San Francisco in 1921. He attended Galileo High School and graduated from Stanford University. He served with honor and distinction in the U.S. Navy as lieutenant senior grade in World War II. It was during WWII that he met his future wife Lucille. They were married at the Mark-Hopkins in full naval dress on February 15, 1945, and settled in San Francisco after the war. Jim first worked at the White House Department Store, then with Greenwoods Restaurant Equipment Company. He owned and helped manage many fine eating establishments, including Smak's Drive Inn, the Pam Pam, Pam Pam East, Biff's Coffee Shop and Rosebud's English Pub. He also operated food outlets at the Hillsdale Shopping Center, including the Red Lion Inn, the Beefeater, Café Napoleon and the Whistling Oyster. His most popular establishment was the Pam Pam East, an awarding-winning, 24-hour New York style coffee shop located in downtown SF at the corner of Geary and Mason. Their famous Steak Soup, Hangover Omelet and Monte Cristo Sandwich were menu favorites. Later, Jim also worked for Thonet Industries and Serta Mattress and had offices at the Design Mart on Market Street. An avid sports fan, he held 50 yard-line season tickets for the 49ers since Kezar Stadium days. Jim was an active member of the Concordia-Argonaut Club for 80 years, where he was renowned for his volleyball prowess, including the "punishing spike." He was a life long member of Temple Emanu El, and a member of the board of the Jewish Welfare Federation. Jim served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Family & Children's Services, and continued to be a devoted leader and supporter of JFCS, serving on the Facilities Committee for more than 20 years where he assisted JFCS to develop their facilities and expand services dramatically throughout the Bay Area. Among other community activities, he served on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Community Rehabilitation Workshop, and tutored children at Alamo School through the SF School Volunteers. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lucille; by his three children: Eric of Berkeley, Joan of Los Angeles, and Robert of Sedona, AZ; and three beloved grandchildren. Jim made many friends in his 87 years, and his wit and company will be missed by all.
