Ralph Fensterwald Dies in Auto Mishap. Ralph Fensterwald, Starling Drive, passed away February 12, at the scene of an auto accident at Landings Boulevard and Heron Way. He was 79. According to his wife, Suzanne, Ralph was most proud of work he undertook with the other members of the service club, Sertoma International. He and several others sponsored a Cambodian family to the United States following the war there. A Mother, Father and four children settled in Sarasota and were assisted in all aspects of their lives from housing and food, to getting the kids off to school. One of the boys graduated from college with an engineering degree, a fact in which Ralph took great pride. While the family has since moved to California to live in a community of other Cambodians, they kept in touch with him. Active and interested in his community, Fensterwald was an early moving force in setting up the Sarasota Community Foundation. He moved to the Landings in 1988 from Longboat and was best known here as a top bridge player and bridge instructor. He and Suzanne would frequently take cruises on which Ralph conducted classes in both duplicate and party bridge. He was a Life Master. He was born in Norfolk and spent most of his career in insurance and pension planning in New York City. He is survived by wife, Suzanne and daughters Robin Blackwood, who works for a non-profit organization in New York and Miranda Louise a professional blues singer in Nashville.
