    • James Lutz, 78, former executive vice president of Montgomery Ward & Co., also served in several community positions including as chairman of Henrotin Hospital and the Washington Square Health Foundation.

A resident of North Lake Shore Drive, he died at home Sunday.

Mr. Lutz, who joined Montgomery Ward in 1964, had started his career in 1939 working in the catalog house of Sears, Roebuck and Co. He was considered a master merchandiser and surrounded himself with company products at home so he could personally test and appraise the items. Several of these were re-engineered as a result of his feedback.

A native of Danzig, Germany, and educated at the Conradium in Danzig, he moved to the United States just before World War II. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Lutz returned to Sears and held a number of executive positions before becoming president of McCory Corp. in 1960.

After joining Montgomery Ward four years later, he served as national merchandise department manager, regional vice president and merchandise manager. He was named executive vice president-merchandising and operating programs and was responsible for two subsidiaries, Jefferson Stores and Standard T. Chemical Co., a manufacturer of paints and detergents.

As chairman of the Henrotin Hospital board, he negotiated the sale of the hospital to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and transformed the proceeds into the Washington Square Health Foundation. Since its inception in 1985, the foundation has granted more than $8 million to promote and maintain access to adequate health care for all people in the Chicago area.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta; two stepsons, Kenneth Sellers Jr. and Jeffrey Sellers; and two grandsons..
