Notes |
- in Cal after 1947
Albert Pfeifer, Jr., 93, died August 6, 2003 at his home at Clairmont Place in Decatur following a lengthy illness. An experienced pilot, he was anxious to join in the war effort and volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces Ferry Command, a division of the Air Transport Command (ATC), in 1943. After a succession of stateside assignments he was transferred to Sookerating, an ATC base in the Assam Valley of India, in June of 1944, to fly equipment and supplies over the treacherous Himalayas to China, as part of the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater. "The Hump" - called the most rugged terrain in the world _ claimed more lives than any other non-combat aviation unit in World War II. Over a thousand pilots and crew members perished, some at the hands of the enemy, others to the jungle, the mountains or the monsoons. Lt. Pfeifer completed 87 round trip missions flying unarmed C-46's and C-47's totaling more than 650 hours flying time on routes which took him to Kunming and other locations in China. He was awarded both the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for meritorious service and bravery in action. As part of the Special Weapons Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Capt. Pfeifer participated in the Hydrogen bomb testing on Eniwetok Island in the South Pacific. Pfeifer and his wife, Helen, took great pleasure in their membership in the China-Burma-India Hump Pilots Association and traveled extensively to group conventions. In 1987, the Pfeifers and other group leaders of the association were invited by the Nationalist Chinese Air Force to the dedication of the Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center in Taiwan. In civilian life, Pfeifer was a manufacturer's representative for Progress Manufacturing Company, a leader in the home lighting industry but flying remained a passion throughout his lifetime. He co-owned several private planes and retained his pilot's license until age 75 when he took up golf. At age 81, he became a member of the Georgia State Golf Association's Hole-in-One Club. The couple celebrated their 69th anniversary just prior to her death in 2002. Pfeifer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Mickey and Phil Goodman, grandchildren David and Joy Goodman, Nathan and Jamise Goodman, Elizabeth and Sonny Azani, and six great-granddaughters
