Notes |
- Suzanne Roussille, age 96, passed away at her residence on September 7th, 2008 with her daughter, Sarena, by her side. Suzanne was born August 12th, 1912 in Jaffa (part of the Ottoman Empire) to the late Dr. Yeshua Chamy (MBE) and Sarina Amzalak. Suzanne was educated in Palestine and England and lived throughout the Middle East, Europe and the United States. She mesmerized her friends with her boundless charm, elegance and signature international accent which bristled with intonations of the seven languages she spoke including Hebrew, Arabic, French, English and Spanish. After immigrating to the United States in 1938, Suzanne lived in Chicago and then Los Angeles and San Francisco where she worked as a medical assistant tending to injured soldiers during the war. Suzanne ultimately settled in Millbrae where she resided for more than forty-five years with her late husband Roger Roussille, a successful advertising entrepreneur and a native of Southern France. Active in the Peninsula Hadassah, Suzanne served as president of that organization and was a lifelong member of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Suzanne enjoyed friendships with people of all ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds and, along with her late husband, stood up to discrimination in the 40's and 50's when such a stance was largely unpopular and controversial. Suzanne was admired as an elegant, well dressed, impeccably mannered and strong-willed standout whose passions included international travel (traveling around the world on several occasions) cooking Sephardic cuisine, languages, gardening, pets, playing mah-jong with her friends and spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love of life, perpetual positive attitude, determination, social grace and awe-inspiring generosity seemed boundless. She would delight her family when she announced her presence upon arriving for a visit with her trademark holler: 'Yoo-Hoo, I'm here!' She is survived by her daughter, Sarena Lubarsky of Hillsborough, her grandchildren, Alex (Sharon) of Burlingame, Aaron of New York, and Noah (Yuri) Lubarsky of Burlingame, and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Shaina and Eva Lubarsky as well as her beloved nephew, Professor Shamay Cotev of Jerusalem, the son of her late sister Marie. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
